I have reviewed some journal article about extensive listening using podcast. Now, I would like to review the application of podcasting as motivational strategy for EFL students. Motivation is often regarded as the main key to make the students achieve the objectives. According to Williams & Burden (1997), the students need motivation to provide major drive to begin language learning later on the motivating force to continue the long and lengthy process of language learning. Acquiring language takes long time so that the students need to be motivated enough to follow the process.
One of the strongest motivational strategies is the use of new technologies including audio visual (Madrid, 2012). In this case, podcasting can be one of the effective educational tools which can raise the level of students’ motivation and language achievement.
For some students, reading is more tiring than listening since the students have to focus on vocabularies and grammar while absorbing the text content. According to Hasan & Hoon (2012) have found in their study that podcast motivates learners towards learning English and improves their language skills, especially listening. The unique feature of listening is how to practice students’ language skill through talks rather than text. Podcast might be appropriate with this case since the purpose is motivating the students to listen and giving them the chance to listen to English native speakers. If lacking sufficient motivation, it would be really demanding even for the very quick learners “to master the higher levels of L2 proficiency” (Dornyei & Csize r, 1998).
Podcasting was firstly used as a tool for delivering information, news and entertainment in the U.S., the office of information Technology of Minnesota University argued that podcasting entails a shift from electronic learning to mobile learning. There are possible applications of podcast in education such as news, student-spoken podcast, and guest lectures, to name a few, which would help the students, develop listening.
The result of this research is in line with the theories above. It makes the students want to learn more materials from podcast. They said that they can study whenever in a convenient time
For my future plan, I think that podcast can be used as the topic for further research because I want to know whether it is really fun or not since the students have a lot of task and podcast is a long time learning. The students may be felt burdened with this task.
