English is not only learnt by the
students of English literature or English language teaching department. The graduate
students from the other departments require English language as the
communication tools in laboratories, supervision meetings, at conference, at
public lectures and even with research participants. To enter an academic
English environment, English as an Additional Language (EAL) is prominent to
support them in English-speaking areas.
However, in this article, most of
EAL students studying outside of North America or the United Kingdom merely
familiar with Standard North American English (SAE) and Received pronunciation
or BBC English (British Accents) in the popular media.
The pre-research stated that the
listening skills was seldom be emphasized. The students likely to be static and
focus on materials given by the academics developing them. The author involved
the international graduate research students participating in listening study
since listening is regarded as an challenge in daily communication. All the
graduate students in the researcher education program over the period 2011 and
2012. Those participants are asked to design their own exercise which is
suitable with their needs through online software and website. Authentic
materials were created and uploaded into the website or software, then it
automatically made a blank column. Those materials were possibly adapted from
public broadcasters that have the real situation of listening activity. It is also divided into several tasks such as
listening for detail, word segmentation, prediction of discourse structures and
Australian accent.
I think independent listening
skill is difficult to be developed, especially, if I intend to imply it for
high school students in Indonesia. The students are not quite familiar with
this learning way except for a high-standard school such as international school,
private school, and favorite local school, since most of them use technology
only for daily interaction for each other. However, I’m not able to deny
learning activity through website because times always move on and we should
create the variety of learning method. Indonesia can be left behind with the other
countries, if the teacher do not want to follow the trend learning era.
