Students' motivation is an important issue in learning process. If the students are not quite motivated, the classroom situation probably will be boring and it affects the students' outcomes. There are some factors that influence the students' motivation besides teaching method or the students' interest about the lesson. The students' character is not only one cause which makes them lose their motivation, but the external factor such as environment also can be the reason. So, it is better for teacher to know what kind of things that might influence students' motivation.
In this article, the writer investigated whether cultural factors and dimensions of students' attributions for their success and failure, motivational goals, self-efficacy, intelligence beliefs, and academic performance will influence the students' motivation or not.
Students' motivation comes from the individual willing to choose their choice to perform action in learning. Students possibly want to be looked good in front of their peers or they really want to know whether they have master the subject well. Naturally, their motivation come up to achieve their goals, since motivation affects ones' aim. On the other hand, intelligence belief is able to raise their motivation. If they believe their skill can be made up, they will probably try harder than before. Besides intelligence belief, cultural background also affects motivation such as religiosity and racial/ethnic. In Indonesia, there are two ethnic. They are Native Indonesian and Chinese Indonesian. In addition, there are several religious and belief in Indonesia such as Islam, Christianity, Catholicism, Buddhism, Hinduism, and etc.
However, this article didn't explain how the cultural background can affect motivation well. The writer just said that muslim tend to be stable in learning because they believe that learning is 'ibadah'. If they have learnt well, they will get good outcomes. Actually, i expect much explainations since i have read in the other book entitled 'thinking like a freak' which said that there is rules that someone should work hard in Protestant. I hope the writer will be more concern in cultural explainations, so that the article will be clear enough.
