People can be trapped in serious problem when misinterpreting one's body movements and gestures. Body movements contribute to non-verbal communication. The performer intends to express something through movements. Every region and country has different culture, since different places have different culture. It means that some body movements or gestures can be considered as the action of respect in certain place, but it also can be interpreted as offensive or disrespectful action for the other people.
Body language is a means of communication which includes body movements of the head, neck, hands, arm, feet, or other parts of the body to reflect expressions. Those things are used to show one’s emotion and to support the verbal communication. This article said that the first impression of one’s talk is 60% eye contact, 30% message, and ear 10%. It means that body language influence the people greater than words.
Besides those physical movements, greetings, how people sit or stand, facial expression, clothes, hair style and tone of voice and the distance between each speaker are considered as body language. The distance between the speakers when they communicate to each other is refers to proximics. It is important to keep distance when delivering your idea, since too far distance can be interpreted as disrespectful and too close distance can be perceived as offensive action. There are four category of proximics. They are intimate, social, personal, and public space. Those proxemics are determined by identifying how close your relationship with your opponent. Therefore, it is important to pay attention about how close you stand or sit while talking.
I learned that we should pay attention to our body language when communicating with everyone, since it means as a non-verbal communication. Especially, if I go to the new place, I should find out what i may to do or not to do so that I will not make people misunderstand about what I intend to say.
